This is a very important first question that often goes unanswered. It is easy to assume that we need help at the first sign of trouble. In the past twenty years, we have seen therapy come into vogue and, at times, almost a status symbol to have a therapist. I think a lot of money gets wasted on unneeded therapy while a lot of therapists get rich by convincing people that are on the brink of lunacy and the only thing saving them from doom is their shrink.People come to counseling for a variety of reasons. Often it is because of a sense of grief. Perhaps grieving over a relationship or sadness in ones life. Perhaps it is a realization that our survival strategies are not working. Maybe we just need to talk. These are valid reasons to see a counselor. Generally, there is one reason people talk to someone. This is called the presenting problem and that becomes what is discussed and resolved.
If you are unsure if counseling is for you, call. It's that simple. An honest counselor who is not there to suck people in forever will tell you up front if therapy is indicated and will give a referral if needed.
